In 2011 we were interviewed by the Observer-Dispatch - this text is from that article.

Leggs Diamond will buy nearly anything of value, from gold teeth all the way up to entire estates, said co-owner Brian Legg.

They then resell those items at affordable prices in their shop.

“Some people might not be able to afford the luxury of buying the things they want brand-new,” Legg said. “This gives them the chance to be able to afford them. And even people who have the money look for deals as well.”

Bright neon signage of the store draws attention to the businesses immediately, letting passers-by know there’s something exciting happening inside. Legg -- along with partner Shawn Aboussleman -- opened the Oneida Castle Leggs Diamond shop on Jan. 1 and offer everything from jewelry, skull caps, incense, and smoking supplies to musical instruments, DVD movies, antiques, and video games and accessories.

“There’s a lot of unique stuff that I run across,” Legg said. “People who have items like old pocket watches or old silverware sets might not realize their value until they come in to us.”

Gold and silver, especially jewelry or old silverware, are some of the specialties at the store. Jewelry can even be broken and still be valuable, Legg said, and they promise to pay more than other local gold, silver and coin buyers.

DVDs; Playstation 2, X-Box and other games -- plus game systems and other electronic technology -- are available as well. Inventory is constantly changing as people bring in their own items to sell or swap, so shoppers should check back frequently to inspect new arrivals.

Legg stressed the items are not there on any kind of consignment from their original owners.

“This is not a pawn shop -- we buy, sell and trade everything outright,” he explained.

*This is the fourth Leggs Diamond location, with the first started 15 years ago in Rome. Legg recalled an earlier buy-sell-trade business had moved out of the area back then, so he thought he might have success bringing in one of his own. The Leggs Diamond business has since grown to also include sister stores in New Hartford three years ago and Albany two years ago, he said.

Aboussleman said he has been a longtime friend to Legg and has helped him out over the years. When the possibility of opening the Oneida Castle business came along, he welcomed the opportunity to join the more experienced Legg in the venture.

“I thought this would be a good way to learn about running a business,” he explained.

Legg said he was attracted to the Oneida Castle site by the building’s easily-accessible location on Route 5 and ample parking adjacent to the building. The landlord was very helpful in getting them set up, he complimented, and the area residents have been welcoming to the new business. Response to the new Oneida Castle shop has been favorable, with a lot of traffic of curious patrons coming in, Legg said.

“It has really been even better than we expected,” he said. “We’ve already started doing return business with our new customers, because we offer them more than our competition for their items. This is a really tight community and the word of mouth about our business has been traveling fast.”

Bringing in items for sale is simple for potential sellers -- they can just stop by during business hours and receive a free assessment of the worth of their items.

For large collections, a phone call in advance is suggested to arrange an appointment.

People shouldn’t underestimate the value of items sitting around their homes, Legg said.

“We buy such a large variety of items that just about anything people might have, we might be interested in,” he explained.

“We will give them free appraisals, with no pressure on them to sell,” Aboussleman added.

Both men agreed one of their favorite parts of the business is meeting the people who stop by the store.

“This is a real walk-in, community oriented type of store,” he explained. “We are really focused on taking care of our neighborhood people and to give them some good deals. We want people to feel comfortable when they come into our place. Everybody’s got to eat, so we don’t want to take advantage of anyone. We want them to leave feeling happy and want to come back again.”
